Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer who was also one of the first Roberts to settle in Atlanta. Her father had keen interest from a young age in the theatre. As a student in Emory University he appeared in diverse productions, both in and outside of the campus. When he was stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi, he received his induction into the air force in 1953. Betty Lou Bredemus was part of the show as well. They got married in 1955. Their first son, Eric Anthony, was born in the year 1956. The couple divorced in 1957. the military and Walter was enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter was employed by Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. The family moved in 1960 and relocated to Decatur Georgia. Walter as well as Betty Lou financed their own production of the local Sunday morning children's show, Bum Bum and His Buddies. Later that year they founded The Actors and Writers Workshop which was in operation for a period of six years. They welcomed in 1965 two children to the family: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
